Description: Arnalo Caprai, originally a textiles entrepreneur, founded his winery in 1971 by purchasing 12.5 acres of land in Montefalco.  In 1988, his son Marco took over the estate to revolutionize the grape that has been growing in the region for more than 400 years: Sagrantino.  Today, they are considered to be a benchmark producer of Sagrantino di Montefalco.  Arnalo Caprai is further celebrated as a producer committed to sustainable farming practices and recognized as being champions for their winemaking in Umbria. Caprai’s inaugural vintage of their Montefalco Rosso is 1975; the vines are trained on Spurred Cordon trellising systems, with a vine density of 5.000-6.000 vines (per ha), yielding 9-10 tons (per ha).  At the winery, the wine sees 12 months of aging in French oak barrique and a minimum 4 months aging in the bottle prior to being released to market.
Taste: This expression of Sangiovese, Sagrantino & Merlot is driven by tart and ripe black and red cherry, red currant, and damson plum. There is a savoury dried herb note of star anise, oregano and black peppercorn to complement the underlying dried leather, fresh turned earth, sweet tobacco and black tea leaf aroma. The wine is dry, full-bodied with refreshing acidity and firm but nicely integrated tannins.
Cellaring Potential: Drink now or cellar 8+ years
Food Matching: Enjoy with charcuterie, pasta with a hearty ragù, grilled sausages or aged cheeses.
