Commonly referred to as the "Barolo of the South”, the late-ripening Aglianico variety grows on the high-altitude slopes of the volcanic Vulture Mountain in the southern province of Basilicata.  The Vineyards are between 10 to 20 years of age and sit between 400 and 550 m above sea level.  The vines are trained on by the Espalier trellising system.   Manual harvest is completed in the vineyard and generally takes place from the 10th to the 30th of October.   Once at the winery, maceration is carried out in stainless steel containers for 7-8 days at a closely monitored temperate of 23° to 26° C.  The wine is fermented dry and malolactic fermentation is completed in stainless steel tanks.   Wine is then matured partially in small French oak barrels, partially in 25 and 50 hectolitre Slovenian oak casks for 12 months.
Taste: A densely flavoured of Aglianico from Basilica. The wine is dry, full-bodied and balanced by the presence of elevated acidity and prevalent tannins. The fruit is tart and ripe showing red cherry, raspberry, black currant and blackberries. There is a spicy quality to the palate; notes of peppercorn, cinnamon and star anise. There is an underlying red rose floral component to the wine and dusty dried leaves and earth on the finish. The wine has a long length and is perfectly balanced.
Cellaring Potential: Drink now or age for 10+ years
Food Matching: A versatile wine to accompany Mediterranean-inspired dishes, grilled meats and firm, aged cheeses.
