Description: Arnalo Caprai, originally an entrepreneur in the textile industry, founded his winery in 1971 by purchasing 12.5 acres of land in Montefalco.  In 1988, his son Marco took over the estate to revolutionize the grape that has been growing in the region for more than 400 years: Sagrantino.  Today, they are considered to be a benchmark producer of Sagrantino di Montefalco.  Arnalo Caprai is further celebrated as a producer committed to sustainable farming practices and recognized as champions of winemaking in Umbria.

1993 is the inaugural vintage of their Montefalco Rosso Riserva; the vines are trained on Spurred Cordon trellising systems with a vine density of 5.000-6.000 vines (per ha), yielding 6-7 tons (per ha). The wine sees 20 months of aging in French oak barriques with a minimum of 6 months additional aging in bottle prior to being released to market.
Taste: an expressive representation of Sangiovese, Sagrantino and Merlot. The wine is dense, dark and filled with tart and ripe berries; blackberry, boysenberry, cassis, red and black cherry. The fruit is accompanied by notes of licorice root, worn leather, cinnamon spice and dried herbs. The palate leads to a long, lingering finish with lots of fruit, spice and finesse. The wine is dry, full-bodied with persistent tannins and refreshing acidity.
Cellaring Potential: Drink now or age for 10+ years.
Food Matching: Enjoy with salumi, firm cheeses (pecorino), grilled meats or grilled eggplant with lentils.
