Henriques & Henriques 15 Year Sercial
Henriques & Henriques is a legendary producer from the island of Madeira; illustrious in producing incredibly balanced and age-worthy wines from primarily their own vineyards. This has been a longstanding practice for the producer since they founded the company in 1850. In January of 1995 at Quinta Grande, a new vineyard was planted at 600 to 750 metres above sea level. This vineyard is spread over 10 hectares and is the largest single vineyard on the island.
The age statements on their labels, is this case the 15 year, delineates the minimum age of wine (as opposed to the average age), present in the bottle.
The wine is produced using the traditional canteiro method where barrels are stored in rafters and gently exposed to heat and sunlight. This unique process allows the wine to acquire distinctive characteristics as a result of slow oxidation and reduction (also called “angel share”). After years of being stored on the highest and warmest floor of the winery, the wines are slowly moved down to successive floors and finally, to the ground floor to finish aging. The canteiro system is an entirely natural approach to aging and refining premium Madeira.

Crisp and dry, everything we love about Sercial Madeira. The wine shows tart and ripe lemon peel and peach pith with underlying notes of nutmeg, cracked cinnamon stick and asparagus. The palate remains consistent with an added wet stone minerality and toasted walnuts. The wine is vibrant and fresh with a long and lingering finish. Serve this will a chill! |
