Schiava Peter Zemmer
This family run winery was founded in 1928 by Peter Zemmer's grandfather. Situated in the village of Cortina in the southern most part of the Italian wine region Alto Adige, this region enjoys a unique terroir with influences of altitute, slopes, rivers and sun exposure. The Adige river is a moderating factor and the soils lend their minerality to the whites that grow here. A family of wine makers, the focus has remained to make wines that are clean, mineral and terroir driven, expressing the cool climate they come from.
Schiava (known as Vernatsch in Südtirol) is grown on the classic Pergula trellising system, situated on the gently warmed loamy soils of the slopes around Cortaccia. This growing area offers ideal conditions to produce wines of great quality. At the winery, the stems are removed from the grapes and are fermented over the course of 8 days while maintaining constant temperature. The grape must is kept in contact with the skins through use of pump overs and gentle pressing. This results in ideal colour extraction from the skins while emphasizing the fruit character of the wine. The resulting wine is light in body, and ideal when served with a slight chill.

Taste: |
This is a dry, light-bodied and fresh style of Schiava; tart, red fruit drives the wine showing sour cherry, cranberry and red currant. There are notes of bitter almond, fresh red roses, and crushed rock minerality. A great example of the fresh style of wines common to Alto Adige. |
