Buying Organic Wines in Ontario

by Luca Discenza

Organic wines are a popular category for wine enthusiasts in Ontario and across the world. Below is a quick guide defining Organic Wine and where you can buy these wines in Ontario.

What is Organic Wine?

Organic wine can be thought of the same way we think of the organic foods you buy at the grocery store. The grapes are grown without the use of toxic chemicals. They are cultivated in select vineyards which do not use any pesticides, herbicides or fungicides on their vines or in their soil. When the grapes are harvested, the winemakers minimize the use of chemical additives in the wines, most commonly sulfites. Other restricted additives include colouring and flavoring agents which are often used to help create consistent blends and flavor profiles. It is important to note that while these are the most common guidelines for organic grape growing and winemaking, the exact definitions and rules for certified organic wines depends on the wine’s country of origin and the organizations which certify their organic winemaking and sustainable agricultural practices.

A winemaking ideology that is often associated with the process of producing organic wine is called low-intervention winemaking. This is an approach to winemaking where the growers and producers ensure there is minimal human intervention both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Low-intervention ideology has two key benefits. Firstly, it respects the vineyards and surrounding lands by preserving the nature of the vines and the ecosystems they depend on to thrive. Secondly, it respects the consumer’s palate; these organic wines offer a purer expression of the grapes and their terroir.

Where do Organic Wines Come From?

In terms of origin, France and Italy are two of the leading wine producing nations, within the Old and New World, promoting the farming and winemaking practices that create organic, low-intervention wines. In Europe the term bio may often be used to describe the practice of creating wines through both organic and sustainable methods. One certification given to French and Italian growers comes from the European Commission, which since 2012, regulates both the farming, harvesting and vinting of organic grapes. France and Italy are key examples of leading organic wine producing nations, however, it should be noted that organic and sustainable practices are now seen across all of Europe and in New World countries as well.

One of the best sources for buying organic wines in Ontario is to purchase them through Ontario Wine Agents. Agents are a reliable source for finding organic wines with their tendency to curate portfolios rich in artisanal wines from producers who have been practicing low-intervention winemaking for generations. For many of these producers, it is their respect for tradition, heritage and the earth, that motivates them to produce organic wines through sustainable methods. Wine agents have direct relationships with each producer they represent and visit the vineyard’s sites and cellars. These producers are often operating small-batch, family owned, boutique estates with low yielding vineyards. This is an environment where, when combined with low-intervention winemaking practices, will provide the consumer with incredible unique experiences in every bottle.

You can also buy organic wines from the LCBO here in Ontario. The LCBO is making a conscious effort to provide options for organic wines both on their shelves and in their Vintages department.
