Wine by Women to Celebrate Mother's Day

On Sunday, May 8th we observe Mother’s Day. It is the very special time of the year dedicated to honouring, and remembering, the great women in our lives. At 30.50 Imports we are celebrating by highlighting some of our most loved wineries, run by stellar winemaking women.

Maddalena Pasqua di Bisceglie, Azienda Agricola Musella

Maddalena is the heartbeat of this highly-celebrated 16th-century estate, Azienda Agricola Musella. Her formal studies were in contemporary history but her professional focus shifted when her father took over the Musella property.  At first uncertain about joining her father, once she stepped foot on the land she knew winemaking was her future.  She has studied biodynamic farming and is instrumental in leading Musella to the esteemed winery it is today.

A classic expression of Amarone; full-bodied and deeply complex. The fruit is dried and concentrated with underlying notes of dusty earth, coffee, and bitter baking chocolate.

Gabriella Burlotto, Castello di Verduno

Gabriella's professional career began in the 1960s when she was one of only four female Sommeliers in all of Italy. Now she is a winemaking legend in Barbaresco and is single-handedly credited with saving the Pelaverga grape variety from extinction!

Gabriella, and her sister Elisa, inherited Castello di Verduno from their father, Commendatore Giovanni Battista Burlotto. In recent years, they have been joined by their daughters. Giovanna and Marcella Bianco and Alessandra and Elisabetta Buglioni Monale are integral to the family operations and managing their luxurious properties, the Castello hotel and restaurant, winery and Agriturismo Ca’del Re.

The perfect red wine for everyday enjoyment: bone dry with refreshing acidity and fine, integrated tannins. A tart, red fruit-driven wine with rose petal florality, black tea leaf and cracked Sichuan peppercorn.

Francesca ‘Cesca’ Vincent, Cesca Vincent

Cesca, as she is known, is a 5th generation winemaker located in Gratallops, within the heart of Priorat, Spain.  Her vineyards are some of the oldest in the area and she inherited her family's vineyard, where her family has been farming grapes since the 15th century, in the 1980’s.

Her winery is female-led and Cesca is committed to passing on the winemaking traditions to her daughters, Carmen and Ester, and enologist, Roser Amorós. The winery, Cesca Vincent, obtained their Organic Certification in 2011 and their philosophy is to produce wine as naturally as possible while producing a dynamic range of wines that exhibit the diversity of their land.

This grenache dominant blend shows layers of crushed berry fruit that lead to a myriad of dried herbs and baking spices. The wine finishes incredibly fresh, a characteristic we love about the wines of Priorat.
