Favourite Wines for Popular “Take-Out and Dine In” Meals

Over the past two years, as we have lived through the Pandemic, the ongoing restaurant closures and “stay-at-home” requirements have presented a challenge for the family chefs who are relied upon to create healthy, appetizing home cooked meals every day.  Finding the inspiration, and drive, to keep food fun and interesting, day in and out, is not an easy task for the home cook.  So it comes as no surprise that there is a growth in popularity of food delivery services as home cooks integrate more take-out into their weekly meal plans.

We love our favourite classic take-out and grab ’n go eats.  Beyond comfort, there is a lot of fun being creative with these meals and complimenting them with interesting and inexpensive wines.  A few simple rules. and a little imagination, can light up the paper bagged ‘utility’ meals.  Here are a few of our favourite take-out options and some geeky wine pairing experiments to spice up your menus.

Poutine & Pinot Noir

Poutine is the ultimate Canadian comfort food! Simple ingredients, abundant flavour and always filling even on a student’s budget!  Pump up this meal with a bright and juicy Pinot Noir from California like our North Coast Pinot Noir from Stephen Vincent.  Hard to put down, it drinks easily and lights up smiles.  A perfect winter weekend take home meal pairing or to be kept in mind for a spring picnic at Trinity-Bellwoods park.

Roti & Syrah Blends

Spicy food has a way of raising the body’s temperature in a helpful way to get you through a cold March. Make your local Caribbean, or East Indian, resto your source of roti wrapped meals packed with stewed spicy goodness.  Full flavoured hearty meals naturally call for big ripe, red wines with soft soothing tannins, like Syrah and Grenache blends, but with this take-out experience we are going with a surprisingly deep and dark scented 2019 Chianti from Fattoria Ormanni, it delivers in depth!

Falafel & Pinot Blanc

Whether as a wrap, or as a dinner plate, falafels are a Middle-Eastern delight complimented by pickled veggies, spicy tabule and creamy tahini.  Light and lively in nature we are marrying this Mediterranean classic with a powerful, fleshy Pinot Blanc from the Alpine region of the Alto Adige in northern Italy.  Peter Zemmer’s Pinot Bianco flexes green apple and stony minerality so intensely that it will make you wish you doubled your food order.

Beef with Black Bean Sauce & Bordeaux blends

Beef with Black Bean is a dish that brings the family together; one order is never enough!  Savoury black beans, tender beef, sweet onions and bell pepper drive the flavours and classic Cabernet blends will always support the dish but we are challenging the norm. We will jump at the chance to serve the Ninfa Tinto blend from João Barbosa, in Tejo, Portugal, for its bright blue fruit profile, sweet tannins and soy-like mineral salinity.

Pad Thai & Albariño

Pad Thai is certainly among the most complex flavoured take-out dishes.  Think soft noodles coated in layers of savoury, nutty flavours and save your light crisp white wines for warmer days.  Richly textured foods demand fleshy, full bodied wines and Thai screams for tropical elements so we love the bold apricot and yellow plum profile that the Xion Albariño from ATTIS Bodegas delivers.  Don’t forget the shrimp crisps!

The perception of take-out dining has changed in a very positive way as home delivery is no longer dominated only by fast-food options.  Today you can get take-out from almost all the top restaurants that only served on-premise diners in the past and, thankfully, we can also order wine with our food deliveries!  Thank restaurants for pivoting!
