Moscatel de Setubal SIVIPA
Sociedad Vinícola de Palmela (SIVIPA) is located in the Setúbal Peninsula, south east of Lisbon, opposite the Tejo estuary. The company was founded in 1964 by a group of winegrowers who collaborated to bottle and market their wines.
In 1990, SIVIPA was joined by the Cordoso family, who at the time, owned 400 hectares of vines. Today, Filipe Cordoso is the lead winemaker while vineyards are still owned and maintained by his siblings and cousins, most of whom inherited their land from previous generations.
The main winery is Quinta do Piloto, located in Palmela. This winery, along with its concrete fermentation vessels, predates SIVIPA, as they have been a part of the Cordoso family for over 3 generations. Quinta do Piloto is one of only a few wineries producing the infamous Moscatel Roxo as a varietal wine.
The Cordoso’s 400 hectares of vines are planted on flat, sandy soils of the peninsula, to the East of Palmela, and mainly planted to old vine Castelao. In addition, they own higher altitude, north-facing vineyard sites planted on limestone soils; located at the eastern end of the Sierra da Arrabida, surrounding Quinta do Piloto. Here, there is a strong presence of Moscatel de Setubal (Muscat of Alexandria) and Moscatel Roxo planted.
SIVIPA produces their Moscatel de Setubal in the traditional method where grapes undergo a slight fermentation, which is then interrupted by the addition of a vinous grape spirit. The resulting wine has an increased alcohol content of 17% and residual sugar of 140 g/L.

Taste: |
An exemplary representation of Moscatel de Setubal; showing all the hallmark flavours of Muscat from Portugal. The wine is filled with luscious notes of mandarin orange, candied lemon peel, dried apricots, and sultana raisins. The fruit is complemented by salted caramel, Manuka honey, dried orange blossom, and cinnamon spice. Like marmalade in a glass, the classic sweet flavour profile and vinous texture is balanced by bright and refreshing acidity. |
